EDUCAUSE Live! | Legal Issues for Higher Ed Technology Professionals: Spend an Hour with Lawyers to Prevent Spending Many Hours with Lawyers

Although higher education technology professionals may wish to spend their days working on the systems and services that make their campuses go, legal issues creep up in many corners of the field. This EDUCAUSE Live! will address the use and misuse of e-mail, the application of First Amendment principles to the digital sphere, and privacy issues associated with employee use of technology. " Use and misuse of e-mail Sometime during the last decade, e-mail became the dominant form of recorded communication on campus. Apparently no one was looking. This part of the session will discuss the problems associated with the management of this fickle medium and offer some simple solutions. " First Amendment For public colleges, and those private colleges that by policy bind themselves to the First Amendment, the digital space holds the same protections and responsibilities as the physical space. This part of the session will describe First Amendment speech protections, designating forums for speech and protest, and the application of such laws to the digital environment including the web, social media, and blogs. " BYO and privacy As the line between institutional and personal use and ownership of accounts and devices blurs, so too has the line between private and accessible. This part of the session will address the policy and compliance issues impacted by BYOD and beyond.
