Transforming the Lecture Hall: Toward a Comprehensive Approach to Classroom Redesign

Lecture halls are common on most university campuses. A growing challenge is keeping these spaces relevant for 21st-century teaching and learning. In this session you will learn how the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in conjunction with Steelcase Education, worked within numerous constraints to transform an aging lecture hall into a technology-rich, active learning environment. Presenters will share their experiences managing a project team across diverse constituencies and organizations, as well as how the integration of learning space design and faculty development principles contributed to project outcomes. A participating faculty member will discuss how the renovated classroom has enriched her interactions with students.
