Tristan DenleyTristan Denley

Tristan Denley earned his PhD in mathematics from Trinity College Cambridge and held positions in Europe and North America before becoming provost at Austin Peay State University in 2009.

Throughout his career, he has taken a hands-on approach in a variety of initiatives impacting student success. He is presently involved in implementing a wide variety of initiatives surrounding college completion, from education redesign across the disciplines to institutional transformation to the role of predictive analytics and data mining in higher education.

His most recent work created a course recommendation system that successfully pairs students with the courses that best fit their talents and program of study for upcoming semesters. This system, which combines hundreds of thousands of past students' grades with particular student's transcripts to make individualized recommendations for current students, was an IMS Global Learning Impact Awards winner.

Summary

Join Malcolm Brown, EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative director, and Veronica Diaz, ELI associate director, as they moderate this webinar with Tristan Denley.

As provost of a regional university, Denley has pioneered initiatives employing predictive analytics and choice architecture to improve college completion and students' academic success. He created Degree Compass, a course recommendation system that successfully pairs current students with the courses that best fit their talents and program of study for upcoming semesters. More recently he has expanded on Degree Compass's functionality by creating the MyFuture system, which informs students about majors. The system uses data-mining techniques to find the courses that are the best indicators of success in each degree program—the courses that capture the flavor of each major—then uses Degree Compass's predictive technology to find the majors in which a student will be the most academically successful. In this webinar, Tristan will explore the impact of this work on institutional and student success as well as future directions in using predictive analytics to improve college completion.
