Is the ROI of developing your campus's own data centers being challenged?

This seminar will feature an overview of the challenges and implications associated with the advent of scientific big data.

You will be introduced to key concepts about big data and build your understanding of how the caliber and cost efficiencies of the supporting IT infrastructure affect the value of an institution’s scientific data.

We’ll also explore and build our understanding from a case study on IT infrastructure for the National Cancer Institute’s Frederick Maryland campus. This case study illustrates the challenges created by the advent of scientific big data, and brings an understanding to the migration and renewal strategy that enabled the NCI Advanced Technology Research Facility (ATRF) to be a vanguard in the translational R&D related to cancer.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Discover how to communicate a business case to evaluate the total costs of IT vs. the total value of research data.
  • Link the processing level of service to research objectives.
  • Build the collaboration between researchers and IT staff, and stewardship for sustainable resources at every level.
  • Identify change management initiatives to help align IT resources to research requirements.
  • Build your probability for capital funding.
