SAC Executive Seminar Action Agenda Items
COMMUNICATIONS
Share NSF info
Communicate research outcomes
Converse with peers about program and possible actions for us.
Check out web sites.
Take the general ideas, topics, areas of discussion, back to our
campus roundtable for them to discuss.
Distribute some of the materials to colleagues.
Share our "conclusions" about learning & technology with my faculty
-- gather feedback, amend "conclusions" as needed.
Discuss NSF initiatives
Personally crusade for extending the vision and stake holding to all
levels, particularly among faculty. Rhetoric at the highest levels only
wont feed the Bulldog.
High level action: better communicate the big picture to the admin
to improve commitment to the tech infrastructure.
Participate in comm. efforts to spread info about research
activities to understand faculty needs
Participate in discussions to advance learner centered instructions
Engage our technology -- Existing forum on technology and pedagogy
in a discussion of the results/ideas/questions from this seminar.
Share info with our teaching & learning w/ technology roundtable.
Attempt to incorporate in our action item list.
Be more forceful in settting technology expectations when new
initiatives are proposed
Use ideas on Research & Learning (4 aspects) as we review internal
funding of "research" projects; and as topic of a Roundtable on T&L.
Share specific conference ideas with President:
1) discuss 4 recommendations
2) discuss 3 questions
as developing new framework for moving ahead
Possibly setup seminars with faculty utilizing the technology as a
tool (example
would be conversations in the disciplines utilizing compressed video)
Better market the current infrastructure to faculty and its possible
uses
System-wide workgroup to address issues related to educational
technology
Initiate a student input mechanism to validate our thoughts on long-
term technology ideology
Launch a discussion with key faculty concerning how we might improve
our research content as a part of undergraduate instruction. Where can
IT help? What are the possibilities of the research functions?
Create a mechanism for ongoing dialogue on campus-roundtable,
councils, etc.
Work with university research council to determine what they feel
are their technology needs beyond the current delivery infrastructure
Work with college computing committees to determine what their
technology needs beyond the current infrastructure and the inclusion of
research in undergraduate instruction.
Work with the library on the current and future of E-publications.
The
cataloging and archival of these to make them more main stream for any
technical society.
STRATEGIC PLANNING
Review strategic plans in place
Multi-level: Launch strategic planning effort that has been waiting
in the wings.
Explore feasibility/capability of an institutional and national S.P
for Research..
Contrive to promote the ideas & action steps in our technology
strategic plan because after hearing all the ideas I realize we are
right on track.
Revisit IT plan to:
1) assure ongoing participation,br>
2) firm up basic principles and create an appropriate decision ?????
Try to structure a coherent and comprehensive Council for Ed Tech
Unify support and academic areas, i.e., focusing both on learning
outcomes
Take a fresh look at our strategic plan with an eye to making it
more of a process than a document
Take back what I learned to improve our upcoming strategic planning
process.
SP for Research --- consider whether we should do something about
this?
Use information on IT issues in University to:
1) influence current Strategic IT planning projects
2) select/hire a new VP IT
3) influence Univ research S.P. toward expanded and more deliberate
infusion into undergraduate education.
As someone new to the University, discover existing academic
planning efforts supportable by technology
Continue efforts to focus attention on sharpening institutional
strategic planning process (more deliberate consideration of possible
futures.)
Strengthen the emphases on strategic planning and consensus building
INTEGRATION
Explore under-grads in research opportunities in existing
environment
We currently are re-examining how our overhead dollars are being
used to support the research enterprise on campus -- It will be useful
to infuse into the discussion how these $ can be used to support
teaching since se are moving toward integrating teaching and research.
INFRASTRUCTURE
Baseline for infrastructure
Re-establish the primacy of completing the "baseline" program and
communicate this principle to the community
RESEARCH/TEACHING OPPORTUNITIES
Encourage more explicit support of research on campus by central IS
organization
Increase how our office (Academic Affairs) acts as a facilitator for
collaborative research.
Promote and get faculty more engaged in some of the new NSF
initiatives that deal with integration of teaching and research.
Develop a map of instructional technology resources available across
the campuses, publish it, try to negotiate access to those for faculty
Engage in dialogues with natural science division faculty on role of
research, NSF plans, need for research PR.
Focus on research for the masses and work to develop a pilot project
to explore this.
Encourage the teaching and pedagogy committee to create a framework
for instructional technology application on campus
Reconsider role of technology and teaching -- research relationship
Encourage and support demonstration projects and experimentation --
especially connecting R&L
LEADERSHIP
Continue to remind the Chancellor & Provost how important leadership
is in moving technology agendas that support our strategic plan forward
PARTNERSHIPS
Monitor closely the outcome of the CSU partnering effort and try to
have the CCS follow their model.
Make certain that our potential corporate sponsors understand the
value we can offer in a partnership.
Partnership strategies -- Cal SATE IDEA
Look for partnership opportunities with other institutions,
agencies, industry
MEASUREMENT/ASSESSMENT
Encourage our IT group to focus more on measurement of progress on
well defined objectives.
Access IT staff skills to encourage/leverage the learning-research
linkage
Stress measures to improve accountability in the IT area
How can I integrate information derived from every technological
interaction with a student to better serve that student regardless of the context
whatever that interaction is administrative, instructional, research, or
whatever?
PRINCIPLE DEVELOPMENT
Develop a "Universal" Principles/Developments list for local awareness,
debate, and possible acceptance. Deal with the universal problem of
parochialism of issues & capacity for solution.
Work on principles for IT to help the decision process
I.T. COUNCIL/FORUM
Recommend a dialogue group of faculty be crated to address research
issues discussed. Include research office representation.
Establish a council for IT
Re-activate a long-idle technology interest group & ask members to work
with me on establishing SP & guiding principles
Follow-up on "Education Technologies Council" at MIT
("We have an informal one but more formal & higher visibility might be
good.")
IT get involved in initiating and participating in some of the large
action initiatives proposed such as -- Best Practices/Case Study identification
project for Technology -- Research and teaching -- Humbolt 3 project.
Review documentation from meeting that has general application and
unique application to UO.
A. Separate, isolated actions
B. Assimilate questions/processes/solutions for local employment
Line Level: 1) announce some org changes 2. collect some specific data
3. launch specific short term actions
Buy a pith helmet
Pick up an adjunct position to regain my "association" with
teaching/learning process.
Follow-up on REU program at NSF
Look for "sticky applications"
Intellectual assets/Publishing/Univ as pub and owner issues toward
actions:
Investigate changing attitudes and how info policy can change
institutional intellectual asset.
