Analytics is used in a higher education environment to analyze various collected data points to gain insight and make informed decisions about complex issues. Specific areas include academic analytics, business intelligence, and learning analytics. EDUCAUSE offers a wide range of resources on this expansive topic in various formats. Recent EDUCAUSE Resources on Analytics include;
- 2012 ECAR Study of Analytics in Higher Education, August 2012. This report takes an in-depth look at the current state of analytics in higher education, outlines the challenges and barriers to using analytics, and assesses progress in analytics, providing recommendations for development.
- The entire issue of EDUCAUSE Review Online, July/August 2012 is devoted to the topic of analytics in higher education. Subjects explored include how the use of analytics can help address higher education accountability, affordability, productivity, and student success.
- EDUCAUSE Analytics Sprint, July 24-26, 2012. This was a free, online experience consisting of online activities and resources, webinars, and discussions on analytics.
- Research and Data Services for Higher Education Information Technology: Past, Present, and Future, EDUCAUSE Review, November/December 2011. The author discusses how higher education IT data needs to go beyond descriptive analysis to new ways of using data and research to align IT strategy with institutional strategy, plan new services and initiatives, manage existing services, and operate the IT organization on a daily basis.
- Analytics Today: Getting Smarter About Emerging Technology, Diverse Students, and the Completion Challenge, EDUCAUSE Annual Conference, October 19, 2011. This video provides an overview of the increased use of blended learning, mobile learning, gaming, personal learning networks, augmented reality in higher education. And asks pointedly that If we want these technology "power tools" to have a real and lasting impact on the challenges of college completion, then anchoring these efforts in on-target analytics that serve not only policy but also core practice will be essential.
- The issue of EDUCAUSE Review Magazine, September/October 2011 spotlights the topic of analytics in higher education. Featured articles include;
- Assessment and Analytics in Institutional Transformation, This article discusses how assessment and analytics, supported by information technology, can change institutional culture and drive the transformation in student retention, graduation, and success.
- Penetrating the Fog: Analytics in Learning and Education, The authors explain how learning analytics can penetrate the fog of uncertainty around how to allocate resources, develop competitive advantages, and improve the quality and value of the learning experience.
- Seeking Evidence of Impact: Opportunities and Needs, The ELI SEI program is working with the teaching and learning community to gather evidence of the impact of instructional innovations and current practices and to help evaluate the results.
- Analytics Rising: IT's Role in Informing Higher Education Decisions, ECAR Research Bulletin, May 2011. This ECAR research bulletin describes how CIOs and other IT leaders, through a focus on analytics, can work together with other institutional groups to provide clear and meaningful information for decision makers across all institutional levels.
