From development and deployment to operation and support, mobile computing puts its own demands on campus IT infrastructure. Developers need appropriate tools, platforms, and test beds, and help desk staff and other support personnel need resources to diagnose and resolve problems. Behind all of this, mobile computing puts new pressures on cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity, data synchronization, and server and network performance, as well as architecture and strategy for authentication and security. Explore this resource site—a collection of all EDUCAUSE resources related to mobile computing support.

Articles and Reports

  • Mobile IT in Higher Education, 2011 Report, ECAR Research Report. This report found that the average respondent institution has enabled only a few services for mobile access. Institutions that have invested more money and those that have larger numbers of staff assigned to mobile-enablement initiatives show greater progress
  • Mobile Perspectives: On devices—Mobile: Letting Go of the Device and Building for Innovation, EDUCAUSE Review, March/April 2011. "This device-agnostic framework and approach has huge practical advantages in that we can reach the vast majority of our mobile community regardless of what device they are using and we can readily accommodate ever-changing devices.”
  • Community Colleges Handle Increased Mobile Device Load, Converge, April 2011. As mobile devices become more prevalent on community college campuses, technology leaders are figuring out ways to deal with the increased load on their networks.
  • From Users to Choosers: Central IT and the Challenge of Consumer Choice, EDUCAUSE Review, November/December 2010. The rise of the new consumer-oriented ubiquitous computing will reshape—and reduce—users’ reliance on enterprise IT. As the people institutions are accustomed to thinking of as users refashion themselves into choosers, colleges and universities will need to devise new ways of supporting constituents and looking out for institutional interests.
  • University IT: Essential and Strategic in Changing Times, EDUCAUSE Review, January/February 2010. Information technology is essential, and it can be strategic. How colleges and universities harmonize these attributes of the IT landscape will make all the difference to their future.
