Open Source Software (OSS) and Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) has deep roots in academia. With the birth of the internet, open source projects have grown in remarkable ways. The resources that follow later on this page highlight sources of interest to educators and those serving higher education. They include references of both the cautious and the committed.

The UK <a href="http://www.jisc.ac.uk/">JISC</a> has also created, <a href="http://www.oss-watch.ac.uk/">OSS Watch</a>. The United Nations has created the<a href="http://www.iosn.net/">International Open Source Network</a> (who are looking for contributors for their section on education) and the <a href="http://portal.unesco.org/ci/ev.php?URL_ID=12034&URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&URL_SECTION=201">UNESCO Free Software Portal</a>. Both house information regarding education. <a href="http://www.apc.org/english/capacity/training/opensource.shtml">APC.org</a> has complied a nice list of open source resources as well.
