BCNET: Collaboratively Building a Multi-Institutional Shared Green Data Center

Thursday, June 10, 2010

Abstract

This ECAR case study examines the work of BCNET, a Canadian not-for-profit organization that builds high-performance networks for British Columbia's research and education institutions. BCNET is engaged in collaborative planning for a multi-institutional, shared green data center that will simultaneously increase data center capacity while reducing the carbon footprint of information technology on British Columbia's campuses. This case study is published in conjunction with the 2010 ECAR study of green IT, which examines the stance institutions and their central IT organizations are taking on environmental sustainability (ES), the progress they are making on a variety of key initiatives, and how the work they are doing is helping them become more environmentally responsible in their business, instructional, and research activities.
