Building a Health Information Infrastructure to Support HIPAA

Abstract

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) places a significant regulatory burden on academic medical centers. Requirements for privacy, access control, training, and tracking have repercussions if they are not enforced. An identity and access management infrastructure can significantly reduce the overhead of implementing and auditing these regulations. This session will present the overall issues associated with supporting HIPAA; the two sessions following at 10:15 will discuss specific strategies attendees can use to address these challenges in the management and technical arenas.
