Building Information out of Data: Executive Information System at Penn State

Abstract

At the Pennsylvania State University (Penn State), the Executive Information System (EIS) provides summary information for executives, using data automatically extracted from a warehouse, operating on the Microsoft SQL Server and presented with the Cognos PowerPlay Server Web Edition. These multi-dimensional information displays are presented in an easy-to-use format over the web using DCE authentication and Secure Sockets Layer encryption to provide both easy access and tight security. This paper reviews the processes (strategies, tools, and internal marketing) Penn State used to develop the EIS, and discusses the current status of the system and a view to the future. Key elements for success in the construction and support of information models for Penn State executives are also discussed.
