The Electronic Filing Cabinet: A Virtual Operating Environment for the World Wide Web

Abstract

This paper described the Electronic Filing Cabinet, a document repository on the Web, providing browser access to scanned image documents and archived e-mail messages. The prototype use is to streamline storage and distribution of incoming paper correspondence in the University's Office of Information Technologies. The EFC supports several functions: communication of documents into the EFC, a basic "flat" storage based simply on date imported, automatic metadata based on OCR or other machine-aided scans, optional additional metadata entered through Web forms, organization of documents into a folder hierarchy specific to each user, and viewing these documents on the Web and editing their metadata. The EFC approaches a virtual operating system on the Web.
