How PIPA Would Affect Colleges and Universities (July 5, 2011)

Abstract

This EDUCAUSE Policy Analysis and Advocacy Program Policy Brief focuses on S. 968, Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act (S. 968), also known as PROTECT IP Act (PIPA). PIPA is a bill that targets websites that enable copyright and
trademark infringement, with the stated aim of preventing online threats to economic creativity and the
theft of intellectual property.

However, this legislation contains provisions that (as stated in a joint letter signed by EDUCAUSE in May 2011) “continue to threaten the stability, freedom, and economic potential of the Internet.” Want to know more? Read the full policy brief on this bill to understand PIPA’s scope and implications.
