Abstract
Identifiers are a powerful tool in communications, and information object identifiers are of particular significance. They play a role in structuring and managing our cultural heritage and intellectual discourse, they have very public and general domains of use, and they have potentially very long life spans. Lynch discusses new identifiers and the roles for which they are suitable in the networked information environment.
