Moving Towards the Virtual University: A Vision of Technology in Higher Education

Abstract

California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, is exploring several cost-effective technology solutions aimed at improving learning productivity, reducing labor intensity, and providing new ways to deliver education and better services to students while enhancing the quality of instruction. Strategic planning and partnerships have been key to their progress to date. This article describes Cal Poly's Mega Server approach, potential applications for the virtual university, partnerships that are enabling their progress toward this goal, and plans for the future. This paper was also presented at the 1994 CAUSE annual conference and is part of the proceedings of that conference as document CNC9436.
