The Network Infrastructure Match at the University of Toronto

Abstract

By all measures the University of Toronto is a very large educational institution with a strong commitment to teaching and research. Achievement of the University's commitment can be furthered by a ubiquitous communications and computing environment. A campus-wide network infrastructure that can integrate voice, image, video, and data is a key requirement of such an environment.The University of Toronto is not a fully-wired campus and there is a need to determine how to maximize the benefit of network infrastructure improvements. This is particularly true in light of the severity of the funding problems at universities - with no relief in the foreseeable future!This presentation will propose a framework that may be used by other Universities to evaluate how network infrastructure improvements may be made in an organized and responsive manner, and will recommend steps that should be taken to reach such a goal. It will also identify areas other than the network that need to be improved.
