Networked Delivery of Multimedia Information

Abstract

Multi-media information sources present exciting possibilities for increasingly sophisticated and evocative presentations of material in many fields of education. Widespread use of this technology has implications for the campus computing infrastructure, local network capabilities, and the services provided by libraries. Dartmouth College is expanding its campus-wide information system beyond textual resources and researching how best to provide broad-based access to, and support for, multi-media for a large community of users in a cost-effective manner. This session will discuss current plans to incorporate image, audio and video media into a networked information system, outline the technical and organizational issues that have been identified, and demonstrate work in progress toward this goal.
