Wednesday, January 1, 1997

Abstract

Technology initiatives within the California State University have resulted in significant advances and improved technical capabilities and efficiency. Human resource and organizational systems are also needed to capitalize on and thrive in this rapidly changing work environment. Three years ago, the CSU had proposed a new job design approach to accommocate changing skill requirements in the information technology community. After a total of five years of development, discussion, and negotiations, the CSU began to implement the new information technology classification series and support compensation structure. This article shares the final phases of the project, describing the design and development of the compensation structure, negotiations with the union, implementation, and lessons learned.
