Next Gen Tools: Competency Report

Monday, July 21, 2014

Abstract

This innovation brief from Next Generation Learning Challenges (NGLC) describes the development and evolution of the competency report created for Northern Arizona University's Personalized Learning degree programs. To help nontraditional graduates stand out in the job market, the competency report identifies specific skills and abilities of its graduates, giving employers a clearer picture of the academic projects that prepare a student for the workplace. NAU’s competency report goes deeper into the student’s learning experience than a traditional transcript does by demonstrating the student’s mastery of content and proficiency in skills that employers are increasingly demanding from today’s college graduates: written and oral communication, managing multiple priorities, solving problems, and collaborating with others.

The Next Gen Tools series of 2-page briefs describes tools and strategies used by the NGLC network of breakthrough model grant recipients, in both K-12 and higher education. The briefs are intended for practitioners within and outside of the network who wish to learn about emerging practices with an eye toward future implementation.

NGLC accelerates educational innovation through applied technology to dramatically improve college readiness and completion in the United States. To learn more about NGLC and the grantees it supports, visit nextgenlearning.org
