Next Gen Tools: Faculty Engagement

Abstract

This innovation brief from Next Generation Learning Challenges (NGLC) focuses on the collaborative, faculty-driven process established by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Texas A&M-Commerce, and South Texas College to develop the curriculum for the Texas Affordable Baccalaureate. The cross-institutional collaboration, openness to diverse perspectives regarding competency-based education, carefully planned convenings, coherent curricula across disciplines and across the 2-year and 4-year institutions, and ultimate approval of the new program by both campuses' faculty senates provide lessons for designing and launching "breakthrough degree programs" in more traditional institutions of higher education. 

The Next Gen Tools series of 2-page briefs describes tools and strategies used by the NGLC network of breakthrough model grant recipients, in both K-12 and higher education. The briefs are intended for practitioners within and outside of the network who wish to learn about emerging practices with an eye toward future implementation.
