Open Source, Why or Why Not?
Thursday, February 11, 2010
Abstract
Unicon conducted a market research session at the EDUCAUSE Annual conference on Nov. 4, 2009, in which participants were invited to discuss why their institution has or has not adopted open source software (OSS), their opinions on the future of OSS, and what challenges they see for increased OSS adoption among higher education institutions.
Participants generally believed in a sustainable future for OSS, as the majority of participants in the session rated the advantages of OSS as higher than those of proprietary software, particularly in the areas of quality, reliability, flexibility, and cost. Moreover, research from the session illustrated the dependability of OSS, as institutions rely on it to perform mission-critical functions and major vendors have lined up to support it.
