Promises to Keep: Information Technology in the New Higher Education Marketplace

Abstract

As we enter a new era as an information-rich society, universities are simultaneously viewed as the solution and the problem. New players with different objectives are entering the marketplace, and a new lexicon is evolving. Terms like accountability, productivity, assessment, responsiveness, market-based, competitive advantage, and return on investment are no longer strangers in the faculty dining room. Technology has long been touted as a key to increased productivity and efficiency in higher education. Yet we've seen relatively little evidence of enhanced productivity on the instructional side consonant with increased investment. The rapid evolution of the Web demands that we rethink many things. To fulfill its promise, information technology decisions must be driven by institutional strategic priorities. Provost Glick will explore the opportunities and challenges facing universities, and how information technology can help universities respond to these opportunities and challenges.
