Abstract
In 1997, Georgia Tech implemented a policy requiring all incoming freshmen to own a personal computer. This paper discusses the issues and policies associated with establishing this requirement, particularly at a state institution, and the lessons learned from a pilot summer program and an incoming fall class. Information about the impact on support services, freshmen computer selections, and operating systems is also provided.
