Rightsizing - Changing the Culture

Abstract

Syracuse University has embarked on a project to move all of its administrative computing application from a mainframe to a client/server environment. Early in this project, it became apparent that many of the challenges would not come from the technological changes but from the changes required in the way both we and our clients work. This paper details some of the changes that our computing organization has made in the first eighteen months of this transition, the changes we have asked our clients to make and what kinds of additional changes we anticipate in the next four years. Initiative such as restructuring the Information Systems organization, retaining existing technical staff, training clients and finding a new way to do business with our client base will be examined and evaluated. Paper presented at CAUSE94, the full proceedings of which are available through this Library as PUB1094. A revision of this paper was published in_CAUSE/EFFECT_ magazine, and is available as CEM9538.
