Abstract
The components of information technology--the computer and the Internet--have become both tools and media for the creation of new knowledge, as well as new means of scholarly communication. IT is changing the nature of scholarship and greatly complicating the management and preservation of information. Will the growing use of IT in scholarship increase the speed of knowledge-creation or lead to chaos that impedes progress?
