Abstract
The challenge in the university setting is to provide a network environment that promotes open collaboration among students and faculty while providing security safeguards for the confidential and critical information assets. Careful planning is necessary to achieve a balance between security and openness. Additionally, IT risk assessment and security-standard compliance are necessary to measure the effectiveness of security safeguards, standards, and procedures. This session will discuss two institutional approaches: one on the development and implementation of effective security strategies and policies, and the other on an institutional approach to risk assessment and security-standard compliance as an integral part of an overall information security program.
