Abstract
Duderstadt discusses challenges and strains on universities, as well as their increasing opportunities. The nature of the institution is changing rapidly, and Duderstadt speculates on its future. This article is adapted from his address at the 1997 Seminars on Academic Computing (SAC) in Snowmass, Colorado.
