University of Maryland College Park's Experience in Putting Student Services on the Web

Abstract

As the University of Maryland at College Park looked for an efficient way of getting services out to students instead of making students come to us, the Web grew in popularity on campus, and made itself the obvious choice in creating an electronic one-stop-shop. Its platform independence, freedom from application distribution, ease of programming, and near ubiquitousness in the university environment made development next to worry-free. From simple, universally accessible applications handling the schedule of classes and a schedule maker (Venus), through secure downloaded systems such as Grade Inquiry and Student Account Inquiry and Payment, to real-time applications such as Drop/Add and Schedule Adjustment, UMCP has gotten onto the Web and into students' hands.
