Using an Extranet for Collaborative Learning Projects

Abstract

The extranet is the latest buzzword for connecting intranets to facilitate cooperative work and encourage new ways of doing business. In academe, an added value is that an extranet can enable scholars to collaborate and share the costs of creating information while deriving the benefits of a group effort. This presentation will detail a collaborative and innovative use of an extranet to create and use the Language OnLine (LOL) resource for use in teaching and learning at the consortium of Connecticut College, Trinity College, and Wesleyan University (CTW). The reserved circuit at the T-1 level of service between all three schools has made it possible for a group of innovative faculty working collaboratively with information services staff to build a sophisticated multimedia-based vocabulary database and online activity templates.
