Virtual Universities: A State-by-State Analysis of Best Practices

Abstract

Two out of every three states are currently developing or participating in virtual university initiatives. This session will present a state-by-state comparison of statewide and regional virtual university efforts, including the Western Governors University, Southern Regional Electronic Campus, University of Texas Telecampus, the SUNY Learning Network, and California Virtual University. The virtual universities will be compared and contrasted on criteria such as enrollment levels, strategic intent, funding models, and instructional value. The presentation is intended to highlight the best practices and policies that have contributed to the effectiveness of virtual universities nationwide. Conclusions offered in the presentation will serve as a guide for planners involved in distance learning delivery in higher education.
