When Shared Vision Meets Business Planning: Successful Strategic Planning Means Alignment, Opportunity, and Collaboration

The NLII is exploring how to align action, including policy, budget, project selection and assessment, with strategic plans. To achieve institutional goals, the phrase "transform teaching and learning" must be specifically defined for that institution, beyond the general meaning of creating an educational environment that is active, learner-centered, dynamic and lifelong, collaborative, cost-effective and accessible.

The NLII is working on developing a methodology for assessing institutional readiness to transform and attempting to identify the elements of an integrated tactical plan, including (but not limited to): communication planning, technology planning, resource allocation, project selection, policy, assessment and evaluation.

This article explores approaches to strategic planning at six NLII member institutions: University of Wisconsin-Madison, Maricopa Community College District, Rio Salado Community College, East Carolina University, University of North Carolina, and Brigham Young University making presentations at the NLII 2003 Annual Meeting. Out of those presentations emerged three common characteristics of successful strategic planning: alignment of planning; dynamic, opportunistic planning processes, and collaboration.
