Abstract
XML (extended markup language) allows users to define their own markup tags and is generally touted as the markup language of the future. This presentation will provide an overview of XML and examine how XML might play a pivotal role in the development of student systems. The current work of the various standards bodies (W3C for XML and ASC X12 for EDI) will be examined together with a review of XML technologies being developed by Sun, Oracle, and Microsoft.
