Biography

Alexandre M. Mateus is a PhD candidate in the department of Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University. His research interests fall mainly in the field of Information Technology and Telecommunication Economics and Policy. His current research focuses on technological and policy aspects of illegal transfers of copyrighted content using the Internet. Alexandre is a PhD student at Carnegie Mellon University since 2006, during this time he has worked on assessing dimensions of illegal transfers of copyrighted content on university campuses using network monitoring as the main methodology for data collection. Alexandre graduated from a 5-year Computer Science and Engineering degree from Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, Portugal, in 2002 and completed a MSc. degree in Engineering Policy and Management of Technology in the same institution in 2006, with a thesis focusing on modeling the effects competition between ISPs in deployment of network infrastructure. Between 2002 and 2005, he worked as a software engineer developing an expert system for scheduling and managing human resources in railway companies implemented in several countries in Europe
