Membership Information



Carleton is the Head of the Library Media Services (formerly Nonprint Media Services Library), University of Maryland. He manages an academic library specializing in physical and digital media collections, electronic access and curricular planning for media integration. As a media librarian specialist he is leading the service transition to assisting students and faculty making visual media an integral part of coursework, research and publishing.

Carleton is active in the American Library Association (and a founding member of the ALA Video Round Table), Association of College & Research Libraries, and CCUMC (Leadership in Media & Academic Technology). He has been on boards of VRT, CCUMC, The National Media Market, and advisor to media producers, distributors and aggregators such as Alexander Street Press and The Creative Edge Studio Collective of the Prince Georges Gateway Arts District. He cherishes his memberships in the American Film institute, Society for Cinema and Media Studies and International Documentary Association. He has coordinated programs for AFI SilverDocs’ International Documentary Conference and judged for Birmingham Educational Film Festival, IDA and ALA Video Notable Awards.

He enjoys networking nationally with colleagues, students and industry professionals, passing on what he may know through various papers and meetings. He has testified on behalf of UM and regional university faculty for Rulemaking on Exemptions from Prohibition on Circumvention of Technological Measures that Control Access to Copyrighted Works. Recently he has presented at national conferences, vendor focus groups, and participated in national projects including Mellon funded Video at Risk and Moving Image Specialists in Libraries.

Currently Carleton is working on projects for re-visioning media services in libraries and engaging communities by supporting and researching new digital storytelling productions via transmedia practices.
