Biography

Carleton is the Head of Library Media Services, University Libraries, University of Maryland. He manages a library and staff specializing in physical and digital media collections, providing services to access collections directly and electronically. These services also now include information services, collection conservation and technology assistance, curricular planning, media integration and video production. The facilities are available to students, faculty and staff for the use of visual media as an integral part of coursework, research and publishing. And in an innovative community engagement program, many of these services are also available to affiliate community film and arts creatives working in collaboration with the Libraries and campus.

Carleton selects and curates general collections of media for the Libraries, which are available at Library Media Services or online via their digital databases and libraries. He also works across The Libraries with subject selectors to assist with access to more specialized subject audiovisual materials, course media integration, as well as collaborations with Special Collections curators.

Carleton is active in the American Library Association (and a founding member of the ALA Video Round Table), Association of College & Research Libraries and CCUMC: Leadership in Media and Academic Technology. He also is a member of the International Documentary Association, International Association for Media and History, and Society for Cinema and Media Studies (Libraries & Archives Scholarly Interest Group, founded 2018).

He has served on administrative boards of many of these organizations and those of The National Media Market, Alexander Street Press, Proquest and the Creative Edge Studio Collaborative. He has coordinated programs for AFI SilverDocs International Documentary Conference and judged video awards for IDA and ALA Notable Videos.

Recently he has worked on projects sponsored by the Mellon Foundation and NYU (Video at Risk and Moving Image Specialists in Libraries), digital video curation projects with information provider ProQuest, and new models of archival media resources for the University with Footage Access web portal and support for the Beatles Live Project (source material for “Beatles: 8 Days a Week, The Touring Year” film).

Current projects are the creation of a media commons space in the Libraries, where specialized and collaborative media-based projects can be supported, the establishment and University affiliation of The Creative Edge Collaborative of Prince Georges County, Maryland, providing University engagement opportunities with students, faculty, local filmmakers, digital storytellers and creatives who are both novice and experienced.
