Biography
Ellen is the Chief Information Officer at Union College where she oversees Information Technology Services which includes all academic and administrative computing functions on campus, as well as Media Services and Telecommunications.
Ellen started her IT career as a programmer in an industry position prior to moving into the academic arena. She has spent over 20 years focusing on the applications of technology in support of teaching and learning. Ellen helped build the first Teaching Theater at the University of Maryland in the early 1990s, when Maryland received a grant from the AT&T Foundation. She was instrumental in setting up the support structure for this type of facility to enable faculty members to concentrate on their teaching without worrying about the technology while in this technology-rich environment. Her career at Maryland grew from being the Coordinator of Instructional Technology Support to being the Director of Academic Support. She also served as Interim User Support Director while at Maryland. She has also served as the Instructional Multimedia Coordinator at North Dakota State University, setting up its first University Multimedia Center to help faculty integrate multimedia into their teaching.
Ellen has published and presented numerous articles all pertaining to instructional technology with a particular focus on supporting faculty in their use of technology. She is actively engaged with professional organizations at the national level with EDUCAUSE and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative. She has served as an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Distance Education Technologies. In addition to her IT experience, Ellen was a member of the Peer Consulting Network at Maryland, which is part of the Center for Leadership and Organizational Change, where she volunteered as a consultant in their process consulting assignments.
Ellen received her Master of Education in Education Policy, Planning and Administration from the University of Maryland and her Bachelor of Science in Computer and Systems Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Ellen is also an EDUCAUSE Frye Leadership Institute Fellow (2009).
