Ira Winston is the Executive Director of Computing for the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Design and the Director of Facilities Planning for the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania. Ira started working at Penn in 1980 as a Systems Programmer in the Computer and Information Science department after receiving his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from that department.

In his role as Executive Director of Computing, Ira manages a staff of seventy five professionals who are responsible for instructional, research and administrative computing for approximately 15,000 students, staff and faculty, working with the faculty to set direction, and serving on numerous University-wide committees. He has been involved with various campus-wide IT projects throughout his career at Penn including the planning of multiple generations of the campus network, the campus IT governance system and course management software implementation. Ira serves as Penn’s representative to the Ivy-plus Directors of Academic Computing group and was the first chair of Penn’s IT Roundtable group, which includes the computing directors from all of the schools and centers.

In his role as Director of Facilities Planning for the School of Engineering and Applied Science, Ira oversees major construction projects including a new $20M building for the Department of Computer and Information Science (completed), a new $42M building for the Department of Bioengineering (recently dedicated) and an $80M building for research in Nanotechnology (in fundraising).
