Joel Cooper is the chief information technology officer at Swarthmore College. He is responsible for academic, administrative, and web information technology services; help desk support; system and network administration; telephony; and classroom and media services. Prior to Swarthmore he served as the director of information technology services at Carleton College, director of information technology at Saint Mary's College (Notre Dame, Indiana), in several capacities in information technology support at the University of Notre Dame, and in academic computing support at the University of Texas at Austin, where he began his IT career. He is involved with a number of national and regional organizations, including EDUCAUSE, CLAC (Consortium of Liberal Arts Colleges), and InCommon.

In addition to presenting at several EDUCAUSE conferences, Cooper served on the EDUCAUSE 2005 Program Committee as an adjunct member, the Midwest EDUCAUSE conference planning committee as chair and member, as a member of the Network Award and Professional Development Committees, and as a member of the EDUCAUSE Board. He has a long-standing interest and involvement in directory services and identity management, networked information, and library/IT partnership. Cooper holds a BA from Calvin College and an MA in Germanic languages from the University of Texas at Austin.
