Mark Notess is a product owner, development manager and user experience specialist at Indiana University Bloomington Library Technologies. His primary responsibility since joining IU in 2001 has been user experience and management of digital media software development and services, including the Variations Digital Music Library and the Avalon Media System. Both systems are open source and in use at multiple institutions.

Before joining IU, Mark was a director of user experience at a higher-education startup and prior to that worked at Agilent Technologies and Hewlett-Packard on e-learning portals, user interface tools, and user-centered design. Mark speaks and consults on online learning and user experience topics. He holds a Ph.D. in Instructional Systems Technology as well as masters degrees in both computer science and education, and he has taught graduate courses in human-computer interaction. He serves on the boards of ACM's eLearn Magazine and the journal, Future Learning.

Mark is also principal at Very There Consulting, a user research and experience design consultancy with a focus on technology in higher education.
