Matthew leads a team of information security professionals in the creation and implementation of a University-wide Information Security Program that includes the following components:
- Compliance & Risk Management - work with compliance offices and all levels of leadership across the University to ensure compliance targets are met, and that risk is brought to an acceptable level
- Incident Response and Investigations - perform system and network forensics for all University investigative functions, including Campus Police, Internal Audit and Human Resources
- Security Architecture - review and approve technical controls to ensure compliance with established standards and best practices
- Security Awareness and Training - provide a broad understanding of information security concepts to the University, and train the highest risk members of the University on information security best practices
- Business Continuity Planning/Disaster Recovery - work with functional offices to perform recovery time and recovery point objective discovery, gap analysis of existing capabilities, construct business continuity plans, and test plans
- Security Assessments - work with departments, campuses and colleges to evaluate their security posture against industry standards, including ISO 27001 and the NIST 800 series
- Identity and Access Management - work to provide role based access control and identity life-cycle management across the University
- Policy and Standards Development - work to implement and raise awareness to University policies and standards in support of the other initiatives of the Information Security Office

He was formerly the Information Security Manager at the University of Rochester. From 2002 to 2007, Matthew helped to coordinate several key security initiatives at the University, including Incident Handling and Investigation procedures.

He received his Masters Degree in Information Assurance from Norwich University in 2005 where he graduated with honors.
