Richard Olivo is a professor at Smith College, where he teaches a lecture and laboratory course in Neurophysiology. The online lab manual for that course ( provides instructions, background information, and videos of procedures in an open website. He is the author of a simulation program, MacRetina, that received an award for "Distinguished Natural Sciences Software" from EDUCOM in 1992. From 1996 to 2009, he served as an Associate Director of the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning at Harvard University. Since 2005, he has organized workshops on teaching for the Society for Neuroscience's annual meeting, and he is director of the Society's new web project, Educational Resources in Neuroscience. In 2005, he received the "Educator of the Year" award from Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience.
