WAN Manager

The Infrastructure group of the Office of Information Technology at the University of Tennessee Knoxville (UTK) is wishing to fill a manager position for the WAN group within Network Services.

Network Services is looking for an individual highly skilled in all aspects of WAN technologies, who takes pride in doing a good job and likes designing innovative solutions to complex networking problems. Network Services offers the opportunity to work with leading network researchers on state-of-the-art networks using leading edge technologies.

The WAN Manager is responsible for the direction and daily management of the WAN team as it meets planned campus objectives. The WAN Manager will share responsibility for the quality of the network and the fulfillment of requests within an appropriate turnaround time and will be responsible for responding to escalations, tickets, and alerts from the NOC or Helpdesk. The successful candidate will work with other IT team leaders to perform network planning, implementation and security, and will provide resolution information as well as work with other teams to complete impact analysis where appropriate. The successful candidate will perform maintenance and configuration tasks as well as troubleshoot and resolve network communication issues.

The WAN Manager may also need to collaborate with other Network Engineers around the globe in the design and deployment of new services and/or enhancements. He/She may also be required to recommend technical solutions that will enhance, increase levels of redundancy, and add flexibility to the existing network. The successful candidate must be able to provide technical expertise to the project and may participate in any phase of a project from problem definition through problem resolution. S/he need to be able to work on multiple tasks concurrently and will maintain extensive contact with customer personnel.

All candidates must be willing to travel for training or conferences (probably 1-2 times per year), carry a pager and be on-call.

Required Education:
- Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent networking experience

Required Experience:
- at least five years experience

Desired skills (some combination of):
- Extensive experience and hands on working knowledge of routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, Multicast)
- Advanced knowledge and extensive experience with QoS techniques across different WAN technologies
- Extensive experience with WAN technologies (MPLS, Frame-Relay, etc.)
- Extensive experience and knowledge in IP, ATM, SONET, POS, Ethernet
- Well acquainted in the use of protocol analyzers, network sniffers and management tools, and other 'tools of the trade’
- Excellent technical and interpersonal skills with ability to work within and across organizations that are geographically separated
- Ability to develop and understand network models and perform 'what-if' scenarios
- Advanced computer/application skills relevant to the industry
- Self-starter who is inspired by technology, highly organized, and able to work with minimal supervision
- Ability to multi-task and work in fast-paced, high stress situations in a professional manner
- Experience building enterprise class data networks
- In-depth knowledge of layer 2 & 3 Cisco routing and switching technologies
- Excellent troubleshooting and analytical skills to resolve complex support issues
- Experience working with ISPs
- Must be able to work independently and also in a team environment with flexible availability
- Strong working knowledge of commonly used network protocols, tools and appliances (load balancers, packet shapers, analyzers, DNS, DHCP, NTP, Syslog, Radius, IPSEC, SSL, SSH, FTP, DSL, SNMP).
- Strong understanding of network security
- Experience supervising others
- Strong working knowledge of Network devices Operating Systems (IOS).
- Experience programming or scripting using programming languages such as C, shell, or PERL

Salary Range: $31042 - $78560

A retirement program fully paid by the State of Tennessee is a condition of employment for all regular full-time employees of the University. Regular full-time employees are eligible for several group insurance options. The University pays 80 percent of the premium for the medical coverage of the insurance plan.
