Katie Ranes - Arizona State: If the institution is a member can anyone affilitated with the institution participate in EDUCAUSE site or is it restricted in some way? Barrie @ Princeton: There is a lot of information going on in the Listserve, but it is very informative Billie: Special guests - sounds great Barrie @ Princeton: say when that is again? Randy Jobski - LCC: is the room number known for the mtg at EDUCAUSE, by any chance? Linda@Syracuse University: How many people have their PMP? Alison Cruess - Univ. Of North Florida: Meeting Room 102A/B Janet Scannell (Bryn Mawr College): Can you join PMI without taking the tests? John P@ George Mason University: Yes, you can join PMI without being a PMP Cathy E: CAPM is also a certification for PMs without as much experience Cathy E: test is based on the PMBOK as well, however jane @ uconn: Yes, please include that in the poll question Howard 2: Does activity here qualify as educational credit towards the pmp? Larry@ucmo.edu: How many have a masters degree in PM? Janet Scannell (Bryn Mawr College): anyone here from a smaller school? I used more formal PM in industry but find a small college not as well-suited to the PMBOK and PMP type approach. others?? Howard 2: thank you Paula Russell: has the PMI certification been of benefit to your career growth and do you frequently use the tools as outlined in the PMBOK? Ron Pristin: Can you get PDUs for any Patrick @ UGA: @Janet, much of higher ed has trouble with it Ron Pristin: Educause event? Cathy E: @Janet, I'm from a smaller school and just building the PMO. It will be difficult, but hopeful! Larry@ucmo.edu: How many have a masters degree in PM? Paula Russell: I'm with Janet and find formal use of PMI concepts does not readily translate into Higher Ed Denis@Boston College: Janet, as Patrick says Higher Ed does have a lot of trouble with it but you can just pulll out the pieces that make sense for your "culture" and apply those. Paula Russell: And that's what we do here, a blended model Nathan @ UALR: Will these slides be available after the session? Barrie @ Princeton: I agree with Denis Janet Scannell (Bryn Mawr College): good q about slides. this maturity slide is great. Patrick @ UGA: I agree with Denis as well Daryl @ St. Cloud State University: Would be interested to see if areas are using agile methodology outside of their development area. Dana @ University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign: We have a PMO here at Housing on the UIUC campus. Howard 2: Babson Jillian@Babson: Babson Dan @ Marquette: We are moving in that direction this FY all capital projects will be entered into Project Server for portfolio management Robyn Betts - Babson College: Babson's PMO actually focuses only on IT projects now, but for the whole college. Denis@Boston College: We have a PMO and enterprise wide is focused on Large and Capital funded projects Dana @ University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign: We are somewhere in between those options. Paula Russell: our PMO also coordinates all project start-ups and lessons learned Denis@Boston College: Just to qualify - we are doing our work for IT related projects only. Robyn Betts - Babson College: Not sure how to interpret the previous question Robyn Betts - Babson College: Just clarifying my response to the previous question Robyn Betts - Babson College: we manage all IT projects, but for the whole college Jennifer: what do you use for ppm software Robyn Betts - Babson College: thanks! Shaun @ University of St. Thomas: We don't have an official PMO but we do assign PMs and provide guidance to others, primarily for IT projects Patrick @ UGA: @Jennifer CA Clarity Nathan @ UALR: @ Jennifer - implementing TeamDynamix Paula Russell: We are not utilizing the budgeting components within our shop Linda@University of the Pacific: Very difficult to apply all of the PMBOK theory in an Academic setting. Barrie @ Princeton: The sense of urgency is different Nathan @ UALR: There are different drivers for projects in higher ed vs corporate Anthony @ Old Dominion University: we do not track all costs (resource costs) Billie: I think silos make it difficult Linda@University of the Pacific: Culture plays a different role Dalin Bruns@ UTSA: I think PM methodology is industry specific Linda@Syracuse University: Right now, PMOs have less power in Higher Ed than in corporate. Larry@ucmo.edu: No focused method for project intake. Karen Brown/NSHE: Higher Ed is more collaborative than real leadership. Linda Sabatelli @ Miami University: lack of desire to standardize and lack of managment to require it jane @ uconn: budget works differently John P@ George Mason University: EVM is non-existent in the Higher Ed setting. Collaobration is key Dalin Bruns@ UTSA: agree about having less power in HE than corporate Patrick @ UGA: Do most PMs really manage projects is it more a coordinator role? Karen Brown/NSHE: very different politics Scott Bingenheimer @ Medical College of Wisconsin: I have found that the faculty do not like the word business requirements, instead they like education requirements. Otherwise, there is no substiute for good project management. Janet Scannell (Bryn Mawr College): what's EVM? Paula Russell: Coordinator role John P@ George Mason University: Yes, I meant Earned Value Management Dan @ Marquette: There are of course some differences but the goals are the same; define objectives and deliver a quality project on time and within budget. Therefore I do not think it is that much different it is more a cultural and control issue which also varies widely in industry. Dalin Bruns@ UTSA: have to admit to the coordinator role, though would like to do more Randy Jobski - LCC: I would have to agree with Dan's points... I voted "No" also... Patrick @ UGA: Coordinator is what we have found can work and would like to do more Paula Russell: Someone mentioned Agile earlier and I fnd that approach to be very well suited for HE Leema Lallmamode: agree with Dan. main difference appears to be how projects get intiated and priortized since there isn't the usual 'bottom line' criteria to work with Sharyne Miller: i agree with dan and leema Linda Sabatelli @ Miami University: agree with Leema Daryl @ St. Cloud State University: @Paula What parts? Patrick @ UGA: Projects die? Denis@Boston College: I agree with Dan Paula Russell: the storyboards and phased approach to the delivery of products Daryl @ St. Cloud State University: @Paula thanks Nathan @ UALR: Is anyone attending PMI Global Congress? Janet Scannell (Bryn Mawr College): topics for next time? Dan @ Marquette: Yes Annette@Drexel University Online: Yes Nathan @ UALR: Yes John P@ George Mason University: My coworker from George Mason is Larry@ucmo.edu: How many havea masters degree in project management? Karen Brown/NSHE: it is VERY usefull! Karen Brown/NSHE: I've gone in the past Larry@ucmo.edu: How many have certification othet thatn PMP? Linda@Syracuse University: Agree with Karen - Global Congress is a great opportunity! Dan @ Marquette: I try and go every other year and find it useful Karen Brown/NSHE: you're welcome! Annette@Drexel University Online: I agree that it is useful Barrie @ Princeton: Thank you Sherri Patrick @ UGA: @Larry SSGB and SSBB Robyn Betts - Babson College: How will we decide topics for next time? Patrick @ UGA: Can you send a list of the suggested topics? Dalin Bruns@ UTSA: Thanks very much for putting this together and for being a great facilitator
