EDUCAUSE Strategic Directions

In early 2008, EDUCAUSE identified a set of strategic directions to guide the association's long-term development. A wide range of surveys, focus groups, and interviews were conducted with members at all levels of the profession to inform the process. In addition, EDUCAUSE held two rounds of webconferences to get feedback directly from members on how best to refine the emerging directions to address member needs.

The presentation below presents the rationale for the development of EDUCAUSE's strategic directions as well as the directions themselves. Key among them is the identification of four major focus areas for EDUCAUSE programming:

  • Teaching and learning
  • Managing the enterprise
  • The evolving role of IT and leadership
  • E-Research and e-scholarship

As approved by the EDUCAUSE Board of Directors, the association will strive to align its programs, activities, and resources with these areas. That will allow EDUCAUSE to establish clear leadership and maximize its impact on the most significant technology issues facing member institutions and the profession.

EDUCAUSE will engage in five major types of activity to realize its goals and meet member needs relative to its focus areas:

  • Knowledge creation and dissemination
  • Collaboration and community
  • Policy analysis and advocacy
  • Career and leadership development
  • Experimentation

As it does so, EDUCAUSE will:

  • Be responsive and member-focused
  • Proactively surface emerging trends and synthesize information
  • Take a leadership role on important community issues
  • Help members be change agents on campus
  • Become a more agile and focused organization

Along with the strategic directions, EDUCAUSE has posted answers to a series of frequently asked questions (FAQs) that clarify the directions' key elements. If you have any questions about the strategic directions that the FAQs do not address, please contact Jarret Cummings (jcummings@educause.edu). Members may send any feedback about the strategic directions to EDUCAUSE President Diana Oblinger (doblinger@educause.edu).

Member Webconferences

The archives of the member web conferences on the strategic directions are below. They include the presentation slides from the discussions as well as a session recording from each round, which will allow you to see how the strategic directions evolved based on member feedback.

Approved Strategic Directions Webconferences, May 2008

In May 2008, the EDUCAUSE board reviewed and approved a revised draft of the EDUCAUSE strategic directions, which incorporated feedback from the member web conferences conducted in February 2008. On May 19-20, 2008, EDUCAUSE President Diana Oblinger held web conferences with members to discuss the draft's implications and receive additional input on its implementation. EDUCAUSE will continue to revise the strategic directions in response to experience gained during implementation and ongoing member feedback.

Draft Strategic Directions Webconferences, February 2008

On February 26-27, 2008, EDUCAUSE President Diana Oblinger conducted a series of web conferences with member representatives to get their input on draft strategic directions for the association. Their thoughts and suggestions helped refine the directions and ensure that they effectively address members' needs and concerns.

EDUCAUSE Values

Our community's values shape EDUCAUSE's strategic directions and actions. EDUCAUSE is developing individual value statements in consultation with members and community leaders. Here we provide a brief overview of what each value means, why our community considers it important, and how it guides our service to members and higher education.

The list of values will gradually change as new statements are completed; the list should never be considered exhaustive. We are working to highlight the core values that truly define EDUCAUSE rather than trying to capture all of the values that motivate our community.

Openness

EDUCAUSE values sharing, collaboration, and open access to knowledge and resources, and thus supports technologies, applications, and approaches that foster openness. Embracing openness as a core value commits EDUCAUSE to helping both its institutional and corporate members engage the topic on a sustained basis, with the goal of maximizing the flexibility and creativity with which members can advance their missions.

Corporate and Noninstitutional Member Strategy

In January 2009, EDUCAUSE initiated a process to evaluate how it engages corporate and noninstitutional members in its community and whether different approaches might yield greater benefits for all EDUCAUSE members. After a series of interviews and working group sessions, EDUCAUSE invited institutional member representatives to participate in web conferences on its findings and ideas to date. EDUCAUSE used the feedback from the sessions to inform development of a survey for corporate and noninstitutional members about options for more effectively involving them in EDUCAUSE activities. The survey will launch in May 2009.

The archive of the member input sessions is below. It includes the presentation slides for the sessions as well as the audio/visual recording of each.
