UC Berkeley Extension is the self-supporting outreach and lifelong learning arm of the University of California, Berkeley.  The Director of New Initiatives and Online Learning provides leadership and entrepreneurship for a nationally and internationally regarded professional, continuing and distance education unit. 





Under the direction of the Dean of UC Berkeley Extension, the Director of New Initiatives and Online Learning will oversee:

  • New Initiatives, Strategic Planning, and Outreach: In consultation with Extension academic departments, envisions, designs and implements sustainable and scalable business models for generating new streams of revenue, including innovative continuing and professional education programs and online self-supporting professional master’s degree programs that are offered in collaboration with UC Berkeley academic colleges and schools. Envisions, devises, and implements an outreach strategy that expands UC Berkeley Extension as a campus resource, as an online academic leader, and as a preferred choice for professional and continuing education. Develops advantageous local, national and international educational partnerships with external organizations, businesses, and governmental agencies.
  • Program Development and Administration for Online Programs: Works with the online team to analyze current educational needs, conduct market research, and create and implement program development and delivery strategy for new online programs. Collaborates and partners internally and across the university at all organizational levels with a variety of academic colleges, schools, and departments; ladder-rank and adjunct faculty/instructors; academic deans/chairs/directors; administrative directors/CFOs; and technical and administrative staff to achieve strategic programmatic goals. In collaboration with UCB Extension academic departments, oversees the selection, quality assurance and evaluation of all online course topics, instructors, course objectives and methods of instruction according to industry-recognized best-practices for all UCB Extension online courses.
  • Online Operations, Management and Supervision: Works with the online team to direct, organize, and streamline all online program and course production to achieve the strategic goals of the online department and of UC Berkeley Extension. Oversees the recruitment, evaluation, academic approval, and renewal of instructors. In consultation with Human Resources, directs, manages, supervises, evaluates performance, and oversees employee development for a team of 16 employees. 
  • Technical Direction and Registration Management: Identifies, creates, and implements technical strategy for online course delivery. Researches and evaluates open-source or commercial solutions for learning management systems (LMS), oversees management of vendor relationships for LMS, technical support, and other licensed systems and services. Internally and across the university, collaborates with student services and information technology departments to oversee, integrate and enhance student registration and LMS data processes/systems and reporting tools.
  • Financial Administration: Responsible for the production of an annual budget, financial management and successful performance of online programs in a fully self-supporting environment.




This position has been designated as sensitive and may require a Criminal Background Check. We reserve the right to make employment contingent upon successful completion of a Criminal Background Check.

  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills.
  • 10 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in online postsecondary education management, including at least 5 years in supervising and leading professional staff. 
  • Knowledge of and experience with strategic project research and planning, needs assessment, program delivery, and program evaluation.
  • Knowledge of the major academic, pedagogic, and technologic concepts that impact online and distributed learning.
  • Knowledge of state of the art distance learning/eLearning development tools, theories and best practices and demonstrated ability to develop effective online programs and services.
  • Proven experience in the entrepreneurial development of revenue generation business models in a self-supporting environment. Proven budget preparation and management skills.
  • Skill in marketing, business practices and customer relations.
  • A high level of political acumen with the proven ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative working relationships at all levels of the organization internally, across the university, and with local, national and international educational institutions, governmental agencies, and businesses.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Outstanding public speaking, presentation, and facilitation skills.
  • Effective management, supervision and team-building skills, including the ability to direct and develop online instructional designers, developers, and program coordinators.
  • Change management skills, including the ability to adapt and handle ambiguity.



  • Advanced degree required.
  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. degree preferred.
