PortalGuard SSO Extended with OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect

PistolStar, Inc.'s flagship product PortalGuard Version 6.2 extends Single Sign-On (SSO) support for modern protocols with OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect and increases cybersecurity by adding reCAPTCHA on SSO

BEDFORD, N.H. - December 18, 2018  – PistolStar, Inc.'s flagship product PortalGuard has been updated to version 6.2., increasing support for authentication and authorization protocols. This new update offers support for OpenID Connect v1.0 (OIDC v1.0) for federated SSO and Open Authentication 2.0 (OAuth 2.0).

The OIDC standard is controlled by the OpenID Foundation. An authentication layer that is built on top of the OAuth 2.0 protocol, OIDC verifies the identity of the end-user based on the authentication that is performed by an authorization server. OAuth, an open standard for token-based authentication and authorization on the internet, qualifies end-users account information without exposing their password.

Bert Audette, Chief Information Officer at Unity College, explained the benefits of adding support for this protocol. "We have used PortalGuard to great effect over the years, and that continues with their new support for OpenID Connect. For years we've utilized PortalGuard for seamless web-based SSO using the SAML and WS-Federation protocols, but our new cloud-based document management system doesn't support these. The addition of the latest SSO protocols like OpenID Connect and OAuth 2.0 allows us to offer SSO for even more applications today and in the future while continuing to leverage a single identity provider that our users are thoroughly comfortable with. PortalGuard has proven to be a tremendous value in meeting our identity management needs yet again whether it relates to secure account provisioning, Self-Service Password Reset, Single Sign-On or Multi-Factor Authentication."

OIDC v1.0 joins PortalGuard's list of supported authentication methods which include: SAML, WS-Federation, CAS, Shibboleth, and password-based Legacy Web Apps with the SSO Proxy.

Also available in v6.2, is extended support with Google's reCAPTCHA v2 in the main PortalGuard login screen. Before a user's credentials are tested against their directory, the reCAPTCHA must be solved. This helps in preventing a Denial of Service account lockout for the user in the event of an automated attack.
