We have a Faculty Welfare Committee that handles all Faculty concerns and roadblocks (if any).  It’s well organized and run.

I was wondering how many Institutions have the same committee for Staff?  Normally, all requests go to HR and they handle them effectively.  However, we would like to have a committee for non-HR related items.

If you have a Staff Welfare Committee would you mind sharing your experience and policy’s (if any)?

Thank you!

Russ,

Macalester has a Staff Advisory Council that covers much of the territory you're asking about.  I serve on it.  We advocate directly to the President on issues of general concern to the staff.  We work with our campus Employment Services (HR) office, but are separate from them, and have sometimes taken different positions than ES on questions affecting staff.  I'd be happy to discuss off-line if you wish.

Cordially,
David

Russ,

Swarthmore has a Faculty Staff Benefits Committee, an Administrative Advisory Council (made up of people who report to vice presidents) and a Staff Advisory Council (made up of staff who are elected from different geographic, and therefore functional, areas of campus).  Details, by-laws and meeting minutes are on the web:  http://www.swarthmore.edu/x15415.xml

Cheers,
Gayle
