Federal PKI Initiatives: Building PKI Interoperability

Abstract

The ESIGN Act, GPEA and other enabling legislation have created the legality and mandates for implementing electronic signature in the U.S. There are large implications for the deployment of PKI and digital signature for broad sectors of government and industry. The Federal Government is building the technical and policy infrastructure for PKI interoperability to support common, national digital signature processes for citizens, business, and government. This session will describe the policy and technical framework for PKI through the Federal Bridge Certification Authority (FBCA) and the Federal Access Certificates for Electronic Services (ACES) PKI programs. This session will discuss the implications of these initiatives on the post-secondary community and the relation of these efforts to the Higher Education Bridge Certification Authority and other industry initiatives.
