2026 EDUCAUSE Workforce Report: How Teams Are Adapting to AI, External Pressures, and Strategic Change

In recent years, EDUCAUSE workforce reports have shown that the technology and data workforce in higher education is navigating sustained change driven by both external and internal pressures. As institutional priorities evolve in response to emerging technologies, financial conditions, and broader workforce trends—and as workload challenges and resource constraints persist—much has been said about what is changing and why. While this year’s study continues to highlight ongoing workforce changes, it places greater emphasis on how professionals are responding to and influencing those changes. This report draws on survey and focus group data to trace how external forces shaping the higher education landscape translate into shifts in institutional strategies, roles, and critical competencies and skills. While many challenges remain, this moment offers an opportunity to reflect on how institutions and teams are adapting—and to consider what these changes mean for the path ahead.
