Few areas of higher education have been as passionately debated as learning assessment in the age of AI. Since the debut and rapid adoption of readily available generative AI chatbots, educators have grappled with how learning assessment would be impacted. Educators have weighed in with opinions ranging from "AI will revolutionize higher education" to "AI will destroy higher education" and everything in between. To that end, EDUCAUSE presents this report on the impact of AI on learning assessment. From March 2 to 14, 2026, we surveyed faculty and staff currently designing or delivering learning assessments at an institution of higher education, resulting in 438 responses meeting inclusion criteria. By only surveying individuals who are currently doing the hands-on work of learning assessment, we can provide you with information about how the learning assessment landscape is changing in practice, not just in theory.
