CDC Provides Guidance on the H1N1 Flu for Colleges and Universities

Created by Anna Gould (EDUCAUSE) on August 20, 2009

As schools prepare for the upcoming academic year, the CDC has teamed up with the Department of Education to make sure the community is preparing for the H1N1 flu. This afternoon, Education Secretary Arne Duncan convened a teleconference call with interested higher education parties to discuss ways on how they might deal with an epidemic on campuses. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and CDC officials also participated. It is likely that more phone calls like the one conducted today will occur as the situation develops.

Journey with Windows 7 (Part 1: Getting Started)

Created by Kevin J. Bailey (Yale University) on August 14, 2009

I've decided to jump in with both feet with Windows 7. I tried to take the plunge back with Windows Vista first came out, and was disappointed by the lack of support from Microsoft for getting its own apps working with Vista. One of my responsibilities is administering Windows servers, and being able to use the server administration tools on a daily basis without having to remote into another machine (running Windows XP) is critical for me.

Suffice it to say I've had much better luck with Windows 7, so far. I've been successful getting Windows 7 to run on a MacBook running Boot Camp without any driver problems whatsoever. I've also been successful with the custom Office 2007 install my office uses as well as Symantec Endpoint Protection. The only catch with Symantec Endpoint Protection is that the version we're using (version 11) doesn't report its status properly to Windows 7, but I assume Symantec is working on this.
